Meteorite phenomenon ...

Dwarsberg Hiking Trail

The North West Free State town of Parys is almost one of the forgotten natural beauties of South Africa and is in close proximity to a mountainous and rugged area where the Dwarsberg Farm base camp is situated and the Vredefort Meteorite Hiking Trail, which is an overnight backpack trail.  A diversity of terrains and vegetations, from grassland to thick indigeous bush and the rugged mountainsides are experienced on the farm.

Both trails start from the old farmhouse which is a lovely old building and offers hikers a chance to experience what it was like to live on a farm in days gone by.  Visit the interesting geological exhibit at Dampoort basecamp which will help hikers to understand the results of the incredible phenomenon of one of the largest meteors to have ever collided with planet earth.

The accommodation is comfortable and includes a undercover braai area.

The basecamp at Damport has electricity, gas stove and fridge.  Fire wood is supplied.

Day 1 of the backpack trail: 12.5km and takes the hiker over mountains and valleys to Deelfontein overnight camp.  Date 2: 7km is an easy walk.  Deelpoort has no electricity but has a cement dam for swimming in.

The Dwarsberg trail is about 12km with a short and easy second day hike of 4km.

Rugged mountains and valleys greet the hiker in the Vredefort Dome and Parys areas.
